Your Australian Shepherd’s First Night

Do note that your puppy is more likely to cry and whine during his first night. After all, it will be the first night he or she will be spending with you and away from his mother and siblings. Because dogs are pack animals, he or she instinctively knows that being away from his or her pack is dangerous. Crying and whining are his or her way of calling for his pack to find him or her. Be there for your new pet. Comfort him or her. Do not lose your patience with your dog or force him or her to adjust right away, as this may just make your Australian Shepherd even more fearful and nervous.

Your Australian Shepherds’ first night in his new home will be difficult for your pet and for yourself. Make sure to stay with your new pet during his first night. Not only will this make him or her feel more comfortable, but he or she will also feel more bonded with you. You may either sleep on the couch in his or her area, or you may even opt to place your dog’s crate next to your bed.

Before going to bed, spend some time playing and bonding with your new Australian Shepherd puppy. Tire him or her out so that he or she will get tired enough that he or she sleeps soundly. Do not let your new pet nap within an hour or so before bedtime, or else he or she will be up all night.

Also, bring your puppy to his soiling area before going to sleep. Praise your new pet and bring him back to where he is to sleep. This not only lessens the number of trips to the bathroom you need to make with your new pet when he or she needs to relieve himself or herself during the night, and it helps you start house training from the get-go.

While you cannot expect to get a good night’s sleep for at least a week, this builds trust in your pet, and it will help him or her adjust to his or her new home. Be patient with your new family member.
